It looks like the suburban English town where he lived as a child, before an unthinkable tragedy happened and his family moved to America. And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey to vivid, agonizing memories that seem more real than the world around him? Author: Rainbow Rowell
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Blurb: In Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life–and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.
Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to. Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?
Excitement Factor: Yes, please! I’ve been really wanting to read Eleanor & Park, and this has been getting stellar reviews.

Author: Megan Sheperd
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Genre: gothic/science fiction
Page Count: 432 pages
Blurb: Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father’s gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true. Accompanied by her father’s handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father’s madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island’s inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father’s dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it’s too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father’s genius—and madness—in her own blood. Inspired by H. G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman’s Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we’ll do anything to know and the truths we’ll go to any lengths to protect.

13414446Title: Prodigy
Author: Marie Lu
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Genre: Science Fiction
Page Count: 384 pages
Blurb: June and Day arrive in Vegas just as the unthinkable happens: the Elector Primo dies, and his son Anden takes his place. With the Republic edging closer to chaos, the two join a group of Patriot rebels eager to help Day rescue his brother and offer passage to the Colonies. They have only one request—June and Day must assassinate the new Elector. It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long. But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong? In this highly-anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestseller Legend, Lu delivers a breathtaking thriller with high stakes and cinematic action.
Excitement Factor: I don’t actually give a shit about this one (the audiobook for Legend was so terrible I had to abandon ship and can’t even think about it without cringing), but a lot of other people do so there you have it.

So, that’s that. I know I haven’t done a review in ages and I promise it isn’t because I haven’t been reading. I was doing some re-reading over the holidays and am currently reading Days of Blood and Starlight so hold on to your butts! There will be a review of that juicy bit of fantasy violence shortly.

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Genre: fantasy
Blurb: Ar student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is–and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.
In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

Excitement Factor: Yes, please! (I have been meaning to read the first book, Daughter of Smoke & Bone, for ages. I’ve heard nothing but good things. I need to get on that).

….And that’s all, folks. I don’t know if the publishing world is taking a collective nap this week since tomorrow is ELECTION DAY, but there is literally nothing all that interesting coming out other than this, at least not that I could find, anyways.

October 30 New Releases, only a billion years late

2 Nov

Hey, guys, hey! So, I dropped off the blogging universe for a while there. Between vacations and job applications and job interviews and etc. etc. etc. I just couldn’t get it together. So, without further ado, here are this week’s new releases that I am at least moderately stoked for:

Title: Rebel Heart
Author: Moira Young
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Genre: Science Fiction
Blurb: It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise. What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads of danger and destiny, betrayal and passion.
Excitement Factor: OMG (Seriously, I have been waiting for this for freaking ever. I wish I could do some sort of magic spell to make my hold come in faster. Or I could, you know, buy it.)

Title: Ruins
Author: Orson Scott Card
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Genre: Science Fiction
Blurb: When Rigg and his friends crossed the Wall between the only world they knew and a world they could not imagine, he hoped he was leading them to safety. But the dangers in this new wallfold are more difficult to see. Rigg, Umbo, and Param know that they cannot trust the expendable, Vadesh—a machine shaped like a human, created to deceive—but they are no longer certain that they can even trust one another. But they will have little choice. Because although Rigg can decipher the paths of the past, he can’t yet see the horror that lies ahead: A destructive force with deadly intentions is hurtling toward Garden. If Rigg, Umbo, and Param can’t work together to alter the past, there will be no future.
Excitement Factor: Maybe, if I’ve got nothing better on my shelf.

And that’s it, folks. Honestly, I think Rebel Heart has me so excited I can’t even think about anything else.

October 9 2012 New Releases

9 Oct

Welp, nothing too exciting this week. Mystic City looks like it could be tight but I’m not dying to get my hands on a copy. I’ve taken your lovely advice and only included books that I am at least somewhat interested in reading, and listed them in order of excitement; from now on the things I am most looking forward to will be listed first. The farther down you go the cooler my enthusiasm becomes. If anything else pops up that I overlooked I will update as necessary. Happy reading!

Title: Mystic City
Author: Theo Lawrence
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Genre: Science Fiction (I think??)
Blurb: Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City’s two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents’ sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn’t remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can’t conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.
Excitement Factor: Yes, please!

Title: All You Never Wanted
Author: Adele Griffin
Publisher: Knop Books for Young Readers
Genre: Contemporary Realism
Blurb: Alex has it all—brains, beauty, popularity, and a dangerously hot boyfriend. Her little sister Thea wants it all, and she’s stepped up her game to get it. Even if it means spinning the truth to win the attention she deserves. Even if it means uncovering a shocking secret her older sister never wanted to share. Even if it means crying wolf.
Told in the alternating voices of Alex and Thea, Adele Griffin’s mesmerizing new novel is the story of a sibling rivalry on speed.
Excitement Factor: This isn’t my normal cup of tea, but it’s getting a lot of starred reviews so…maybe.

Title: Velveteen
Author: Daniel Marks
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Genre: Paranormal
Blurb: At sixteen, Velveteen Monroe was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.
The problem is she landed in the City of the Dead. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven either. Grey, ashen and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do there. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind. Bonesaw.Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment he deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days. But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting could actually crack the foundation of her new world, not to mention jeopardize her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker. Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules . . . or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

September 25 New Releases

26 Sep

Egads, only my second week doing new releases and already I’m running behind! I had all these intentions of writing not just this post, but the review of Kat Zhang‘s What’s Left of Me, but instead I sat out in the late September sun and finished reading John Corey Whaley‘s Where Things Come Back. I’ll give you a hint: I really liked one of the books, the other one was rather underwhelming. I’ll let you try to figure out which one’s which before I write up the reviews. Now, without further adieu, WHAT THE HECK IS NEW THIS WEEK????!!! (Or at least: what are SOME of the new books this week??)

NEW FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 25

Title: Dodger
Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: HarperCollins
Genre: historic fantasy
Blurb: A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he’s . . . Dodger.
Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London’s sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He’s not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl—not even if her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England. From Dodger’s encounter with the mad barber Sweeney Todd to his meetings with the great writer Charles Dickens and the calculating politician Benjamin Disraeli, history and fantasy intertwine in a breathtaking account of adventure and mystery.
Excitement Factor: OMG.

Title: The Blessed

Excitement factor: Maybe, if I’ve got nothing else on my bookshelf.

Title: The Infects
Author: Sean Beaudoin
Publisher: Candlewick
Genre: horror, (black) humor
Blurb: Seventeen-year-old Nero is stuck in the wilderness with a bunch of other juvenile delinquents on an “Inward Trek.” As if that weren’t bad enough, his counselors have turned into flesh-eating maniacs overnight and are now chowing down on his fellow miscreants. As in any classic monster flick worth its salted popcorn, plentiful carnage sends survivors rabbiting into the woods while the mindless horde of “infects” shambles, moans, and drools behind. Of course, these kids have seen zombie movies. They generate “Zombie Rules” almost as quickly as cheeky remarks, but attitude alone can’t keep the biters back. Serving up a cast of irreverent, slightly twisted characters, an unexpected villain, and an ending you won’t see coming, here is a savvy tale that that’s a delight to read — whether you’re a rabid zombie fan or freshly bitten — and an incisive commentary on the evil that lurks within each of us.
Excitement factor: Maybe, if I’ve got nothing else on my bookshelf. (I should clarify: this actually looks good, but I have a hard time with zombies.)

Title: The Other Normals
Author: Ned Vizzini
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Genre: …fantasy? I think?
Blurb: Given the chance, fifteen-year-old Peregrine “Perry” Eckert would dedicate every waking moment to Creatures & Caverns, an epic role-playing game rich with magical creatures, spell casting, and deadly weapons. The world of C&C is where he feels most comfortable in his own skin. But that isn’t happening—not if his parents have anything to do with it. Concerned their son lacks social skills, they ship him off to summer camp to become a man. They want him to be outdoors playing with kids his own age and meeting girls—rather than indoors alone, with only his gaming alter ego for company. Perry knows he’s in for the worst summer of his life. Everything changes, however, when Perry gets to camp and stumbles into the World of the Other Normals. There he meets Mortin Enaw, one of the creators of C&C, and other mythical creatures from the game, including the alluring Ada Ember, whom Perry finds more beautiful than any human girl he’s ever met. Perry’s new otherworldly friends need his help to save their princess and prevent mass violence. As they embark on their quest, Perry realizes that his nerdy childhood has uniquely prepared him to be a great warrior in this world, and maybe even a hero. But to save the princess, Perry will have to learn how to make real connections in the human world as well.

When Will suddenly loses his parents, he must flee to the school. There he begins to explore all that he’s capable of–physical and mental feats that should be impossible–and learns that his abilities are connected to a struggle between titanic forces that has lasted for millennia.
Excitement factor: Maybe, if I’ve got nothing else on my bookshelf.

But why doesn’t anyone else see them . . . and what do they want? As secrets are revealed and darker truths surface, Jack desperately struggles to maintain a grip on reality. He knows what he sees, and he isn’t crazy. . . . Or is he?
Excitement factor: Maybe, if I’ve got nothing else on my bookshelf.

New this week! And some other thoughts on life.

16 Sep

So, it’s come to my attention that I don’t post enough. When I first started this blog, I thought I would just post a review whenever I happened to read a YA book, which ends up being roughly every month or so, which just isn’t enough. How to remedy this? I probably won’t read more than one YA book a month since I am an adult and do like to occasionally read books meant for grown-ups; for example, right now I am ALMOST DONE with Zadie Smith’s White Teeth and holy cow it’s amazing but it’s taken me a couple weeks to plow through 540 pages of tiny typeset for adults. I also decided that, while I’m sure EVERYONE is DYING to hear my long-winded, snotty ex-English major reviews, people might want a little more. Some spice, some fluff, some little slurps of juice to hold you over until I wax snarky on whatever teen book is just waiting for me to devour it.

My point being, I decided I’m going to start doing a weekly post on new books for the coming week and, because I am a librarian, readers advisory booklists. So, if there are any themes or read alikes you want to know about, send me an email (contact info in my “about” section) or post a comment, I’d love to hear from my readers!
